Central Baptist Hospital was the first hospital in Central Kentucky to offer
stereotactic breast biopsy, a procedure performed by the breast radiologist that uses a precisely-placed needle, under mammography guidance, to remove a tissue sample for diagnosis.
Stereotactic breast biopsy offers a fast, accurate method of detecting breast disease detected on your mammogram but not seen on your ultrasound. During the procedure, you will lie face down on a special table and your breast will be compressed. From below, a digital imaging system takes stereoscopic (three-dimensional) views of the lesion and instantly displays them on a monitor for the radiologist to view. Your breast will be anesthetized, and the computer will aim a biopsy needle directly into the suspicious area. Several highly accurate biopsies will be drawn for analysis by a pathologist to determine if the area is cancerous or benign.
