Diagnostic Radiology

We offer all general radiology services (X-rays and fluoroscopy), including intravenous pyelogram (IVP), used to examine the urinary system; upper G.I. series, used to examine the esophagus, stomach and small intestine; and barium enema, used to examine the colon.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound studies use high frequency sound waves to make pictures of different parts of the body. Central Baptist's radiology department offers ultrasound studies that can help detect abdominal, thyroid and pelvic disorders. Obstetrical ultrasound is offered through our special Perinatal Diagnostic Center. Ultrasound studies of the heart (both echocardiograms and transesophageal echocardiograms) are offered in our cardiovascular lab.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a safe and painless technique used to image the structure and function of internal organs and to treat diseases such as hyperthyroidism and cancer. The exams involve oral ingestion or injection with small amounts of radioactive materials, followed by scans with a gamma camera. Central Baptist's radiology department performs nuclear medicine studies of the thyroid, lungs, bones, liver, spleen, brain and gastrointestinal tract. Nuclear medicine studies of the heart are offered in our cardiovascular lab. Physicians are also licensed to administer I-131 Therapy and Strontium 89, a radioactive material used to treat cancer patients with painful bone metastases. In addition, Central Baptist Hospital was the first facility in Lexington to offer lymph node mapping for sentinel node localization, used to help doctors determine how far certain types of cancer have spread.

PET/CT Scans

A PET/CT scan (Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography) is a diagnostic nuclear test that is most commonly used to identify cancer and the spread of cancer. It is a very sophisticated and powerful type of PET imaging. Images are acquired in 3-D in approximately 30-45 minutes. One short scanning procedure replaces two longer examinations on other units that require patients to have a CT and also a PET scan, and then have the images "fused".

Vascular Studies

Vascular studies are used to diagnose problems in the veins and arteries of the legs, arms, neck and abdomen. Our radiology department provides arteriograms and venograms. Ultrasound studies are offered in our cardiovascular laboratory.

CT Scans

A CT scan (also known as a "CAT scan," for "Computed Axial Tomography") is a diagnostic test that combines the use of X-rays with computer technology. A series of X-ray beams from many different angles are used to create cross-sectional images of the patient's body. These images are assembled in a computer into a three-dimensional picture that can display organs, vessels, bones, and tissues in great detail. Central Baptist offers the latest technology for these services through the use of three "spiral" scanners including a 64-slice scanner. They provide better quality images with shorter scan times for our patients.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Magnetic resonance imaging is a medical technology that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to allow physicians to explore the inner workings of the human body. No radiation is involved in this procedure. Central Baptist's radiology department is equipped with a state-of-the-art 1.5 tesla magnet MRI to produce faster scans and higher quality images to help your doctor detect and define differences between healthy and diseased tissue.

Diagnostic Outpatient Centers

Central Baptist has two outpatient diagnostic facilities: one is at the corner of Nicholasville Road and Southland Drive (100 Southland Drive), and the other facility is the Hamburg Outpatient Center, 1775 Alysheba Drive. Both centers provide outpatient diagnostic X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, PET and CT services. The centers are designed to make exams convenient for patients who are visiting their personal physicians.  

The Southland Drive Outpatient Center is open Monday-Friday at 7:30 am, 8 am to 6 pm for x-ray, all other exams by appointment only or call (859) 260-6676.
