A referral for genetic counseling can be made for some of these reasons:
Pregnancy Factors
- You have a birth defect, genetic condition or chromosome syndrome and are worried about it being passed on to your children.
- You are at risk to be a carrier of a genetic disease based on your family history or ethnicity.
- You have had a prior pregnancy with a birth defect, genetic condition or chromosome syndrome.
- History of three or more miscarriages
- Birth defects on ultrasound
- Positive maternal serum marker screening
- Ultrasound markers associated with a genetic syndrome
- Maternal age of 35 or older at delivery

Family History Factors
- You or your child has a newly diagnosed or known syndrome, and you are interested in learning more about the genetic condition.
- Your child has a known genetic condition, and you are interested in having more children.
- Anyone with a diagnosis or family history of:
- Hemochromatosis
- Thrombophilia
- Alzheimer's Disease, early onset
- Huntington's Disease
- Polycystic Kidney Disease
- Familial Hypercholesterolemia
- Familial Cardiomyopathy
- Neurodegenerative disorders, e.g. Machado-Joseph Disease, CADASIL
- Alpha-1 - Antitrypsin Deficiency
- Cowden Syndrome
- Retinitis Pigmentosa
- Personal or family history of cancer, particularly at young ages (under 50)
- Unexplained infertility or pregnancy loss
- Premature ovarian failure
