How Does CyberKnife Work
The CyberKnife System, designed by Accuray, combines two advanced technologies to deliver a revoluntionary, frameless radiosurgery.
- Multi-jointed robotic arm - The first innovation is a lightweight linear accelerator mounted on a multi-jointed robotic arm. This flexible robotic arm provides access to unreachable tumors and helps reduce harm to critical structures surrounding the lesion such as vital organs and tissues. Click here to view larger photo.
- Image guidance system - The second innovation is an image guidance system similar to those used for cruise missile guidance. This revolutionary advancement allows the CyberKnife to compensate for patient movement, giving it the ability to achieve submillimeter accuracy. This allows radiation to be delivered without using rigid immobilization, such as a head frame. CyberKnife accuracy is called "Tight to the Tumor" accuracy, which means the radiation beams can conform to even small, complex-shaped tumors. No other radiosurgery system in the world offers this accuracy.
